My research focus is in the functional simulation of human cognitive activities. In particular, I am interested in the cognitive links between perception and language. As perception starts with the environment around observers, one of my research topics is the knowledge representation and reasoning about spatial environments, e.g. the internal relations between different kinds of spatial knowledge, such as the relation between the distance relation and the orientation relation, the relation between the connection relation and the distance relation. As language goes beyond spatial domain, another research topic is how spatial knowledge and spatial reasoning can be extended to non-spatial domains, i.e. the computational mechanism of metaphor. To this end, I am engaged in automatic knowledge acquisition as a prerequisite for the automatized natural language understanding. This work is carried out within the Framework of the DFG project LogAnswer-II.
